Welcome from General Chairs
General Chair's Message
Welcome to IEEE INFOCOM 2014. This is the 33rd edition of this premier Annual Conference on Computer Communications. We extend you, as well, a warm welcome, to Toronto, Canada, and we invite you to enjoy our many cultural and entertainment venues and to explore our diverse multicultural neighborhoods.
Having served as Program Chair for the 7th IEEE INFOCOM in 1988, I can attest to the tremendous growth and vibrancy of the INFOCOM community. In 1988 we had 127 papers vs. 319 in 2014, but the TPC had 25 members vs. 472 today. Clearly INFOCOM has become much more selective. On the other hand, most of the sessions in 1988 had one or more authors who were to become IEEE Fellow, so the very high quality of INFOCOM had already been established. Comparing the paper titles underscores the sea change in technology that has transpired in 25 years; In 1988 wireless networking, mobility, localization, sensor networks, energy efficiency, software-defined networking and cloud computing were not covered at all. I am very pleased to report that INFOCOM remains at the forefront of computer networks!
The success of IEEE INFOCOM depends on the efforts and dedication of many volunteers and this is the time to recognize them. The TPC Co-Chairs Giuseppe Bianchi, Yuguang Michael Fang, and Xuemin Sherman Shen did an outstanding job leading the massive reviewing process while a new process was being introduced. We thank the 40 Area TPC chairs, the 472 TPC members and the reviewers for their efforts. Minghui Shi was the TPC Vice Chair for Information Systems handling EDAS.
The IEEE INFOCOM program includes panels, workshops, keynotes, demos and posters, and student activities. We sincerely thank our Co-Chairs for: Panels, Wenjing Lou and Baochun Li; Workshops, Jelena Misic and Lin Cai; Keynote, Xiuzhen Cheng and Xavier Perez Costa; Demo/Posters, Stefano Salsano and Yu Cheng; and Student Activities, Jimin Chen and Vincent Wong.
We thank our Co-Chairs handling various organizational aspects: Publicity, Giovanni Neglia, Nei Kato, Yanchao Zhang; Student Travel Grants, My Tahi and Kui Ren; Local Arrangements, Lian Zhao and Xiaodong Lin; TPC Meeting Arrangements, Baochun Li and Ben Liang; Finance, Harvey Freeman and Bruce Worthman; and Publications, Sangheon Pack and Janise McNair. We thank our patrons and sponsors and Vic DiCiccio, our Sponsorship Chair.,
As usual Debora Kingston of IEEE Communications Society did the heavy groundwork for the conference, provided timely support and advice, and kept things on track.
We must thank Harvey Freeman, for his undivided dedication to making INFOCOM a success, and Tom Hou for his guidance and direction.
Finally we thank you, the conference participant, for making INFOCOM a success, and we wish you an enjoyable and productive conference.
